Agave sp. Azul Monterrey

More Info

Common name:  Azul Monterrey Agave

Agave sp. ‘Azul Monterrey’ Is possibly a new species to cultivation and is from high elevation. It was discovered in the Monterrey area of northern Mexico, where it grows on karst limestone mountains, in an open pine/oak forest it is fairly close in proximity to ovatifolia, Agave asperrima, and Agave montana. Given there is some variation between my seedlings I suspect there has been hybridisation. Most of the seedlings are silvery blue and ovatifolia like, others definitely have Montana in the mix. Based on its location, it should have hardiness very similar to Agave ovatifolia.

  • Hardiness: H4: hardy through most of the UK (-10 to -5) possibly lower
  • Position/Aspect: Full sun or partial shade, free draining gritty gravelly soil. Prefers to be planted out but will tolerate pot culture for several years
  • Drought tolerance: Excellent
  • Size: unknown, but medium to large is expected.
  • Seed grown at the Kent nursery: yes
