Jubaea chilensis x Butia odorata F4

Common name: Blue Jubaea

A magnificent and rare hybrid between Jubaea chilensis and Butia odorata that sports a huge trunk and crown, nearly the size of a Jubaea while its leaves are distinctly blueish and slightly keeled as in Butia. This is an F4 which means that its an ((Jubaea x Butia) x Butia ) then crossed with itself. The round seeds are about half the size of a Jubaea seed.  It grows faster than Jubaea, while showing excellent cold-hardiness, comparable to that of Jubaea, and is a great addition to the limited range of palms available for the cool temperate garden. Seeds from this particular cross originated in France and I would expect this to have more Butia traits than Jubaea. I have one of these exact plants in my own garden and it has proved very cold hardy and is a lovely blue colour

• Hardiness: H4: hardy through most of the UK (-10 to -5) at least…Probably -12c for short periods

• Position/Aspect: Full sun to semi shade. Good draining is important but not entirely essential

• Drought tolerance: Very good when planted in the ground

• Size: 10 meters+ after 30-40 years

• Seed grown at the Kent nursery: yes
