Common name: Chinese Fan Palm

A subtropical fan palm Native to southern Japan, Taiwan, the Ryukyu Islands, southeastern China and Hainan. A single trunked palm with broad, lime green leaves have elegantly drooping and curled tips, which gives rise to its other name, “Fountain palm.” With it’s moderate cold hardiness it is certainly work trying in milder coastal gardens or the far south west on the UK, but it will also do very well in a pot for several years and brough in for cold winters.

 

  • Hardiness: H3: 1c to -5c Hardy in coastal / mild areas except in hard winters and at risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good microclimate. Can survive with artificial winter protection.
  • Position/Aspect: Full sun to semi shade. Will apprecaite a sunny sheltered spot against a wall.
  • Drought tolerance: Very good when planted in the ground
  • Size: slowly up to 3m after 15 years
  • Seed grown at the Kent nursery: yes
